Hot Peel vs. Cold Peel, Glitter and Foil: A Guide to DTF Film

DTF film carries your print from the printer to the garment, and the film you choose affects the workflow as much as the finish.

Hot peel vs. cold peel

  • Hot peel film is peeled right after pressing, while the transfer is still warm. It's faster for production runs. Example: COWINT double-sided hot peel film, 13" x 328 ft.
  • Cold peel film is peeled after the transfer cools. It usually gives a glossier finish and more forgiving edges.

Always follow the press time, temperature and peel instructions for your film and powder.

Single- vs. double-sided

Double-sided (coated) film has a matte backing that feeds more reliably and resists static and slipping on the platen.

Specialty films

  • Gold glitter film adds a sparkle layer to the transfer. We stock it in 11.8" and 23.6" widths.
  • Gold/silver foil film creates a metallic stamp effect. It comes in 11.8" and 24" x 33 ft rolls.

Choosing a width and length

Match the roll width to your printer's media width. 11.8"/13" rolls suit A3 desktop printers, and 24" rolls suit 60 cm printers. Longer rolls cost less per foot but take up more storage. Keep film sealed and away from humidity.
